HTTP- HyperText Transfer Protocol. This is the protocol that is used to carry traffic between a Web browser's computer and the website.

Geocities is perhaps the most popular of all, with lots of free space. They, like Tripod, give you pretty good enhancements to your homepage, such as the 3D PhotoCube, a fully customizable guestbook plus lots more. Membership is required, as well as inclusion in a certain category that best fits your homepage's content.

Tripod - 11 mb space size
I haven't gone through this website thoroughly yet, but their membership privileges are quite generous. You can choose between a quick (& instant) homepage builder or a custom builder, depending on your expertise. They even give out free guestbooks, and lots of other features that enhance your webpage. Upon entering this site, make sure to fill out your membership first.
perks: lots of webspace, shorter URL, ftp access, very well-organized
irks: no control whatsoever over guestbook design, uploading can be slow
Fortune City - 20 mb space size
This is perhaps the most generous anyone can get. Read this: 20MB of free webspace! Just fill up their application and you're ready to go!
perks: very wide leg room to play with, shorter URL
irks: extremely slow and confusing
Xoom - 11 mb space size
Xoom gives you wide space to pour in your creativity. You can start out with their "Easy Page Builder", with lots of background options and cliparts.
perks: ease of use, free cliparts and background images, good webspace allocation, small URL, free chatrooms
irks: CGI support-less, interface may be confusing for beginners
Angelfire - 5 mb space size
Angelfire offers limited space, but however also gives nice features to your homepage. They also encourage you to continually spice up your homepage if you want to win their monthly "best site" award, which gives your site instant recognition.
perks: speedy connection, exclusive sound and clipart libraries for members, monthly "best site" competitions
